With summer heat hanging on well into September, it’s easy to forget that winter is just around the corner. So now is the perfect time to make sure you won’t be left in the cold by having your heating system inspected by a reputable air conditioning and heating professional.
Make sure your heating system is operating safely and at peak efficiency with an annual heating system inspection.
When selecting an air conditioning and heating company to perform your inspection, don’t let price alone be the deciding factor. Most heating and A/C companies offer heating inspections, but some use these services to sell you on additional services you may not actually need.
When shopping around for a heating and air conditioning company, be sure to do your homework. Ask whether or not the contractor is licensed and insured. If possible, read online reviews and customer testimonials. It’s also a good idea to find out whether or not the company is a member in good standing with your local Better Business Bureau.
You should also find out what all is included in the inspection. A thorough heating system inspection should include the following:
- Check the pilot and assembly
- Check the air and gas mixture
- Check the heat exchanger
- Check the pressure valve
- Check the blower control
- Lubricate all moving parts
- Check the flue and vent pipes
- Check all safety controls
- Check and adjust the fan belt
- Check the blower components
- Check and, if necessary, adjust the gas limit
- Check all electrical connections and components
- Check all filters – clean or replace as needed
According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the National Fire Data Center, faulty and neglected heating systems are the second leading causes of house fires in the U.S. An annual average of 49,100 heating fires occurred in residential buildings in the U.S. between 2002 and 2004. These fires were responsible for 125 deaths, 575 injuries and $232 million in property damage and one-quarter of these fires were the results of improperly maintained equipment.*
Don’t take chances with your family’s safety. Take advantage of the remaining mild days this fall to have your home’s heating system thoroughly inspected. A thorough inspection can actually save you money by lowering your energy consumption and, in some cases, helping you avoid costly heating repairs in the future. And you’ll have the peace of mind that comes from knowing your heating system is safe and operating at peak efficiency.
